Suiting up
Designers and high fashion companies alike are saying goodbye to their pandemic uniform of tracksuits and pajamas in favor of (warmly welcomed) suits for men’s winter fashion.
Suits for Fall/Winter 2022-23 are precision-engineered and available in a variety of materials, including silk, velvet, denim, tweed, flannel, wool, and even biker-style leather, as seen at Bianca Saunders. A major trend is the revival of double-breasted blazers in a variety of forms. The lengths have become longer, and the shapes have expanded with new volumes, particularly at the shoulders. The waist is cinched and often padded to create imposing shoulders, or the jacket is completely destructured, with some jackets featuring innovative rounded shapes. Trousers, on the other hand, contain imaginative solutions for fastenings, creases, and darts, as well as cuts, such as arched legs.
Turtle Necks
Besides providing a host of benefits and protection from harsh winter weather, turtle necks have the added benefit of adding a certain refinement and sophistication to an overall outfit.
During their most recent presentations, Zegna, Prada, and Tod’s, among others, all emphasized all-rounder high neck shapes. Turtlenecks with classic, tight-fitting collars and voluminous pieces that wrap the wearer up like a scarf were available in a variety of sizes and colors from Zegna which will enhance men’s winter fashion. Brunello Cucinelli concentrated on thick, knitted turtlenecks reminiscent of fishermen’s attire, displaying the basic version with jackets, while Prada’s coarsely knitted, enormous sweaters also alluded to harsh waters. The fashion firm also developed close-fitting, sporty variants of the turtleneck top.
Knits with motifs
Designers are injecting a sense of whimsy and lighthearted frivolity into the staple winter sweater, putting a spin on the traditional with designs galore. Men’s winter fashion 2022-23 offers a plethora of options, ranging from playful versions that saw animals as at JW Anderson to darker versions as shown by 44 Labels Group, which essentially glorified symbols reminiscent of radioactivity warning signs, to Etro, who showed elements from the plant and animal world, some of which were reminiscent of Christmas sweaters, and K-Way, who transformed their knitted product with single checks.
Shearling coats
After spending the majority of the previous two years indoors, men’s winter fashion now has a collective desire to go all out and spend as much time as possible experiencing the outdoors. This has put outerwear in the limelight for the next season. Along with fur jackets, a variety of traditional outdoor clothes emerged as standouts in post-pandemic menswear ensembles. Outdoor staples for the new season, including aviator coats, come in many shapes and sizes, such as colorful extra-large down jackets and three-quarter-length parkas.
Shearling and bouclé wool jackets were very prevalent, either reinterpreted and destructured as at Y/Project, or completely changed as at Jonathan Anderson, both for Loewe and his own label’s collection, while Hermès displayed jackets with blue fur lining.
Joggers
Comfort-first apparel, a trend that originated in late 2019 and expanded due to the pandemic, shows no signs of abating. In this sense, joggers continue to shine in men’s winter fashion, so much so that they have surpassed the gold standard previously held by pants. Comfy joggers have beyond the strictly snug, old-fashioned way of dressing to become an uber-chic, must-have male item, worn with suits and matching coats. They were seen on the runways with a handy drawstring closure and innovative elements including a straight-leg cut and a wrinkle at the front.
Jeans Rebirth
Denim is making a comeback this winter in men’s winter fashion, thanks to a much-anticipated revamp. The message is straightforward, but how it is given is not; designers and high fashion labels alike experiment and go all out with creative techniques, surface ornamentations, and washes to breathe fresh life into this wardrobe essential. Philipp Plein walked the runway in a denim two-piece consisting of a jacket and pants adorned with large-scale sharks. What’s so fantastic about that, you may wonder? To begin, the two-tone sharks were bordered with eye-catching diamonds and had a business logo print.
